SCIENCEScience is not just a bank of knowledge but a way of viewing and accessing the world. As the impact of new developments and technologies progress the importance of making this subject accessible to all has grown. Here at the Barclay School we have responded to this need with enthusiasm, seeking to offer courses which fulfil the needs of all students. To illustrate our initiatives we have sought to answer some of the questions you may have, but please do not hesitate to talk to staff and students or contact the Department directly. What courses are followed? All courses in Years 7 to 11 follow the requirements of the National Curriculum. We base the course in Year 7 building upon the work completed at Key Stage 2. Years 8 and 9 further develop the scientific knowledge and experiences of Year 7 to prepare the students for the Key Stage 3 tests. Years 7 & 8 follow a ‘home built’ scheme of work whilst Year 9 work is based on the published Hodder Science. At GCSE we are following the new OCR 21st Century Science course, an innovative and exciting course designed to produce scientifically literate citizens through a highly practical based course. Students can take core, additional or triple award qualifications. At Post 16 we offer AS and A2 Level awards in all three sciences. What are the lessons like? Do students use textbooks? We have textbooks and a variety of other materials to support all of our courses. What about the teachers? All the science staff, both teaching and technical, are fully qualified and experienced. We are rightfully proud of the work undertaken by these staff in the development and use of Information Technology in Science, the introduction of responsive new courses as required and their desire to achieve the best for every student. We have 8 fully refurbished laboratories and 2 classrooms, all of which have ICT facilities, and a purpose built prep-room. Primary school science is also taught in all rooms to support our science work with feeder primary schools. |
